Darkness you can feel……..

Exodus 10:21 “And the Lord said unto Moses, “Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.”

Have you ever felt darkness?  The ninth plague upon Egypt, when God lead His people out of captivity, was darkness you could feel.  This was no ordinary darkness. This was blackness that saturated the very soul, a thick, oppressive, ominous shadow of the heart. This was the darkness that Job felt when he thought God had abandoned him…”the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.” (Job 17:13)

The Darkness of “God obscured” to us.

Job knew this gloom like few people will ever know it, the darkness that we sink into when we are no longer in the presence of God, when he has removed himself from our thoughts and our lives and our hearts and our minds. Darkness we can feel. Job found there existed “A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order…” (Job 10:22)

Without God, there is also no order; no design; no purpose to the human soul, such as before God began His work of creation.  Without light, where order can be seen and built upon, there is chaos in that darkness, in that formidable void.  In Genesis 1:2 this is clear “And the earth was without form, and void: and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters…” In Genesis 1:3 we see the first thing that God created, the very first thing He had to create. “And God said let there be light; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.”

Without God, darkness is the black night of the soul that never ends.

In Exodus, the plague of darkness came before the death of the first born, when the angel of death passed over the Israelites who in faith rested in the blood of the lamb upon their door posts. We know this glorious salvation that spared them that night foreshadowed the blood of our own Lamb, Jesus Christ, by “whose stripes we are healed”.

Jesus expels the darkness of our souls, that darkness we can feel by the great light of His presence within us. Jesus is light, the very light of the world. Isaiah prophesied this “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light…” (Isaiah 9:2)   He is the one who Paul described in Colossians 1:13 as Him “who hath delivered us from the power of darkness….”

There are those who would say that this Jesus was not God incarnate, that He was not God that came and dwelt among us, our Immanuel, God with us, even though He himself told us “I and the Father are one”.  (John 10:30)

Yet we know that Jesus was God by what happened when He died at Calvary.

Matthew 27:45 “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.”

Mark 15:33 “And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.”

Luke 23:44 “And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.”

Without God there is nothing but darkness; darkness that can be felt. If you do not have His presence in your life you are walking in darkness.

God died for you.  God did not die for nameless people. He died for those he foreknew from the foundation of the world, for you, who he formed with His hands and His breath, knowing you so intimately that every hair on your head is numbered. Knowing you and your sin and your own dark heart better than you will ever know it yourself. He died to destroy your heart and soul’s darkness forever.  He shaped your parts and fashioned you and loved you, all the while knowing that tHis great love for you, yes for you, would lead him to send His Son to die for you; to bring you back into the light of His presence. If you have not asked God for forgiveness of your sins, accepting the atonement Jesus offers, then you will be in darkness forever.  “But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 8:12)

Please do not wait to accept this gift. Time is slipping away…..the people of this world are seeking more and more the shadows that obscure their sin.

It is fitting that at the very end of this world, the fulfillment of all things, there will be darkness here on earth once more.

Joel 2:31 “The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.”

There will be darkness for those who do not believe because He will remove His presence and give the world up to their sin.

Amos 5:18 “Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! To what end is it for you? The day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.”

God  will redeem this fallen world and restore all things.   There will be a new Jerusalem where the light of Jesus Christ, the Lamb, has banished the darkness forever. There will no more be any sorrow or weeping or shame or hurt.  There will be no more darkness.

My prayer for you today is that the One who knows no darkness basks you in the light of Jesus, now and forever.

In Christ!
